$17 Million Southwest Detroit Health Center Breaks Ground

A ground breaking ceremony for a multi-million dollar health center in Southwest Detroit is set for today. The Southwest Detroit based Community Health and Social Services Center or CHASS has been raising funds for the project since 2003. The center, to be located at the corners of Ford and Junction, will provide health services to the uninsured, underinsured and general public.

The center will give CHASS more than three times the amount of space it has at its current site next door, enabling it to double the 15,100 patients it saw last year and creating 50 positions, from health care and dental provider to clerical staff, said development director Denise Pike.
The nonprofit currently employs 80 people between its Southwest Detroit and Midtown locations.
Harley Ellis Devereaux Corp. is the architect and Turner Construction Co. the general contractor and construction manager for the project, which CHASS expects to create 150 full-time construction jobs over the next 17 months.

The center is in an area of Detroit with a large Latino community. A report by WDET's Martina Guzman asserts CHASS began in a house a few decades ago and has a bi-lingual staff. Construction is scheduled to be completed by late 2012.
